Japan and NVIDIA Launch the World's First National AI Infrastructure
Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, in partnership with NVIDIA and Noetra Corp., announced on 16 July 2026 the launch of the world's first national AI infrastructure, under the "FRONTia Project" aimed at developing multimodal foundation models for robotics and physical AI.
The new infrastructure features 13,750 NVIDIA Vera CPUs and 27,500 NVIDIA Rubin GPUs, with 140 megawatts of data center capacity, to strengthen Japan's ecosystem across manufacturing, logistics, and telecommunications.
The move is part of Japan's broader AI Robotics Strategy, which targets capturing more than 30% of the global AI robotics market by 2040, representing an opportunity estimated at around $133 billion.
